The Purpose of Love: Inclusive or Exclusive

"For God so loved the World that he gave his only son, the everyone who believes will not perish but have eternal life." Why is it that so many make the issue about those who are perishing instead of the persuasive power of the Gospel to save? Within the context of the story of Nicodemus, I think we can find the context to better understand the communal nature of the gospel message and its power to save us.
Anger in the Temple

Anger is not something we like to talk about in the church. Psychologists tell us that human emotions are neutral but how we use them is critical to righteousness and wickedness. The apostle Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, "Be angry but do not sin." Jesus cleansing of the temple is an act of righteous anger. Let us not sanitize it but seek to better understand how anger works and how it can be constructively used of good and not sin.

At the beginning of Lent we pay a lot of attention to the call to resist temptation and repent but Mark makes a special point of reminding us that angels were present in the wilderness ministering to Jesus as he faced those 40 days. We have angels in our lives too. They might not look like we imagine angels to look -- long white robes and fluttering wings but more like a middle school teacher who believed in us when we didn't believe in ourselves or a coach who let us play a sport even when we weren't so good at it. When facing our own wilderness experience it is good to know that there are angels in our wilderness.
