Many people come to the Bible with the wrong question: "What must I do to get into heaven after I die?"  In this parable Jesus explains that is the wrong question.  The right question is Who is God and What is God like?  When you ask these questions you see in Christ the inbreaking fo God into human life.  The world values power and wealth and control while the Kingdom of God values compassion and justice and love.  Life in the Kingdom begins here and now when we follow Jesus not when we die and go to heaven.  Jesus teaches that heaven and hell are choices we make right now and those choices may have eternal consequences.

Every year we celebrate what God is calling us to do in the year ahead by dedicating our yearly estimates of giving to the life and ministry of the church.  The parable of the talents reminds us that we have a generous God who expects us to use the gifts we have been given to build the realm of God's kingdom here on earth.  It is a joy to participate in this work.

Today is Reformation Sunday and the 500th Birthday of the Reformation.  We look at the life and ministry of Martin Luther and the role the gift of faith played in his life.  Many of the great witnesses to faith struggled.  Many did not know the fulfillment of the hope they carried in their hearts but they lived and ministered faithfully, sure that God would accomplish God's salvation.  We need to live empowered by the same gift today as we struggle against unlikely odds.
